Variations

The theme and most of the coda of this dramatic finale comprise a nearly literal orchestration of Beethoven's setting for voice and piano of "The Sweetest Lad Was Jamie," Op. 108, No. 5. Within this framework, fifteen original variations have been interpolated, some of which emphasize the original folksong melody, but many of which are polyphonically complex or otherwise extremely free iterations of or allusions to the borrowed material.
