"This pedestrianized square in the Centre of Manchester UK has a fine church at one end and the commercial centre of the city and the Cathedral at the other. St Ann's Church was the venue for the first performance of my Communion motet

Hoc est enim corpus meum

and of my organ variations on

Du Schöner Lebensbaum."

"The square itself boasts a monument to the Boer War—surrounded by mysterious balls; a fine theatre; many interesting shops, including a nostalgia emporium called "Past Times"; and rows of market stalls put up by European traders at Christmas and other times of year selling curios, mulled wine, chocolates, and sculpted thingamigigs."

"So this piano piece is a nicely swung swagger, slightly drunk and slightly lost, a waltz inspired by the rich mulled wine of the German market stall holders, based on the tonality of C but wandering around the chromaticisms in a swing style all its own, possibly looking for some spiritual centre—or just for somewhere to sit down and wait for the dizziness to pass. . . ."
