Psalmus XXXVI is a setting for alto, tenors, and basses in five parts of selected portions of the well-known Old Testament text in a twentieth-century Latin translation. Concerned by the rising tide of criminal violence in the world, Caicedo-Russi appeals in this work for justice and renewed spirituality. The composer makes use of 7/4 (and intermittently 5/4) meter throughout, sometimes reducing the text to syllabic fragments or treating the lower voices as if they were percussion instruments. Psalmus XXXVI concludes with a homorhythmic injunction: "Spera in domino""Trust in the Lord"in the home key of G Major. Here it is performed by the dwsChorale (Sale, UK), under the direction of David Warin Solomons.
The composer explains his motivations for writing this Prelude and its accompanying psalm setting as follows:
The text has been translated into modern English by David Solomons:
The sword will penetrate their hearts
The small amount that the just have is better
And their inheritance shall be forever
The unjust shall perish, they shall be destroyed
The just shall inherit the earth
And they shall dwell in eternity over it
Trust in the Lord
