Hyacinthus

ornament

Broc,

Hyacinthus was a fair youth beloved by Apollo, god of the sun and music. According to myth, the West Wind (Zephyrus) was jealous of Apollo, and blew a discus off its course so that it struck Hyacinthus, mortally wounding him. Grief-stricken by this loss, Apollo transformed the young man into a beautiful flower whose petals bear the Greek words, "Ai, ai!"--"Alas, alas!"
