For "La Fée verte" the strings follow an early setting by the composer of the poem "Alcohol" by the English poet Gavin Ewart, representing the "green fairy" of Absinthe beloved of many poets of the late nineteenth Century, whilst the bassoon quotes Verlaine's name and interacts with the strings in a way that follows the laterrather more abstinentpoet of La Bonne Chanson: vade retro Satanas!
